LONDON, Mar 26, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Cannes Lions has today announced members of the 16 juries of the 2015 Festival of Creativity.

309 senior industry professionals from 44 countries have been named. This is the most diverse line-up in the history of the Festival and includes the first judges from The Czech Republic, Ecuador and Indonesia - testament to an ever-increasing diversity of countries now winning Lions. More women will judge than ever before (31.5% compared to 28.5% last year and 20% in 2013), while the range of job profiles represented also continues to expand, now including an architect, fashion designer and head of emerging technologies.

"Enormous consideration is given to who will judge," said Philip Thomas, Lions Festivals CEO. "We seek out those who've distinguished themselves over the course of a career in creativity - people recognised for their professional achievements, but equally valued for their vision, admired for their passion and trusted for their integrity."

Juries will convene in Cannes during the Festival for 11 days in total to review, debate and decide the fate of an anticipated 40,000 entries - a process that Thomas describes as challenging, inspiring and important to the future of the industry.

"The task of judges is to identify truly great creative thinking and award iconic ideas. It involves long hours, impassioned debate and difficult choices. But ultimately their choices will inspire the industry and show the way forward for communications over the coming years."

His wife Keren told New York Times that the cause of Saks' death on Saturday was pneumonia, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Saks, who was born November 8, 1921, in New York City, trained for acting at the Dramatic Workshop of the New School while attending college at Cornell University.

He made his acting debut in Broadway's 'South Pacific' in 1949 and his TV debut in 1951 on 'Out There'.

He turned into a director in 1960s and shared a long-term professional relationship with Simon.

He directed Simon's Broadway plays which included 'Biloxi Blues', 'Brighton Beach Memoirs', 'Jake's Women', 'Rumors', 'Lost in Yonkers', 'Broadway Bound', 'The Odd Couple' and 'California Suite'.

Saks then directed seven feature films based on Simon's Broadway plays, including 'The Odd Couple', 'Barefoot in the Park', 'Last of the Red Hot Lovers' and 'Brighton Beach Memoirs'.

He won three Tony Awards for Cy Coleman-Michael Stewart's musical 'I Love My Wife' and Simon's plays 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' and 'Biloxi Blues'.

Saks is survived by his wife Keren and their daughter Annabelle, his two children Matthew and Daniel from his marriage to Bea Arthur, and three grandchildren. Reported by Mid-Day 17 hours ago.

Fox Searchlight Acquires Davis Guggenheim’s Malala Yousafzai Documentary, ‘He Named Me Malala’

Fox Searchlight Pictures has acquired worldwide rights, with the exception of France and other-French speaking territories, to distribute Davis Guggenheim‘s Malala Yousafzai documentary “He Named Me Malala.”

The latest film from the Oscar winner will be released sometime this year, Fox Searchlight presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula announced on Monday.

Produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald under their long-term production partnership with Image Nation Abu Dhabi and co-financed by Participant Media, the documentary is described as an intimate portrait of Yousafzai, an activist who was wounded when Taliban gunmen opened fire on her and her friends’ school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

Executive producers include Mohamed Al Mubarak and Michael Garin from Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Jeff Skoll for Participant Media.

Studiocanal will distribute the film about the world’s youngest Nobel Prize winner in France.

The film following the educational activist will launch an international advocacy and fundraising campaign in partnership with the Malala Fund, Malala’s nonprofit organization working to empower adolescent girls globally through a quality secondary education.

The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlight’s executive vice president of worldwide acquisitions, Tony Safford; senior vice president of business affairs, Megan O’Brien; and senior vice president of acquisitions & co-productions Ray Strache, and Julian Zajfen at Ziffren Brittenham, which represented the filmmakers.

“Malala’s incredible journey is both heartbreaking and inspiring.  Her bravery in the face of adversity brought us to tears.  The chance to bring her story to a global audience will be an honor for all of us here at Searchlight,” Gilula and Utley said in a statement.

“Spending the last 18 months with Malala, her father Ziauddin and their family has been one of the great experiences of my life.  Now that Fox Searchlight is joining Image Nation and Participant Media, we have the opportunity to share their moving story with the world,” said Guggenheim.

Bunheads' Sutton Foster Ditches the Song and Dance Routine to Go Back in Time on TV Land's Younger

For most actresses, age is one of the most hated four three-letter words in the English language. The actress has received a crash course in just that as the star of the new comedy Younger, which premieres Tuesday at 10/9c on TV Land. From Beverly Hills, 90210 and Sex and the City executive producer Darren Star, the series follows Liza, a newly single housewife and mom who must pretend to be 15 years younger to re-enter the publishing world. After finding success and winning two Tony awards in Broadway productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes, among many others, she arrived in Hollywood in 2012 to star on Bunheads, a fast-talking dramedy from the creator of Gilmore Girls. [...] this is someone who proclaims, "I still shop at the Gap!" when describing the disparity between her real age and Liza's fake age. [...] it was Foster's gypsy mentality that served her well when she signed on for the role and met with Star's frequent collaborator, famed costume designer Patricia Field. Liza, thankfully, can let her hair down both literally and figuratively with Maggie (Debi Mazar), her longtime BFF and the only person who's in on her big fat lie. The other characters have to believe her but the audience has to be in on the joke, so where is that line so that it becomes believable that you're with [Liza] as an audience, as opposed to going, 'Oh, you know what? BBC ropes in 'The Lunchbox' director Ritesh Batra for a film BBC Films, the film arm of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is celebrating its silver jubilee this year and has unveiled its latest slate of feature projects. It has roped in director Ritesh Batra to direct an adaptation of Man Booker Prize-winning book, 'The Sense of An Ending', written by Julian Barnes.*Ritesh Batra*

A source confirms the report, saying: "Yes, it is official. BBC Films has announced its film slate and Ritesh's name features in it."

This will be Ritesh's second film after 'The Lunchbox', which won worldwide acclaim and was nominated for the BAFTA Awards. The Nimrat Kaur and Irrfan-starrer did a worldwide theatrical business of 22.5 million dollars across 48 territories.

'The Sense of An Ending' tells the story of Tony Webster, whose comfortable world is rocked after an explosive letter from his careless youth emerges. The adaptation is the debut screenplay of playwright Nick Payne, whose play 'Constellations' was recently on Broadway starring Jake Gyllenhaal. David Thompson will produce it for Origin Pictures.

Ritesh refused to comment on the casting and when the film is likely to go on floors. Reported by Mid-Day 22 hours ago.

'The Wiz' Will Be NBC's Next Live Musical Event

'The Wiz' Will Be NBC's Next Live Musical Event Watch VideoNBC has tapped "The Wiz" to be its next live musical television event. (Video via Universal Pictures / "The Wiz")

*"My Ma would be so proud! Going to see the Wiz!"*

The Broadway musical won seven Tony Awards, including best musical, in 1975. (Video via YouTube / Theatre at the Center)

*"I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too!"*

"The Wiz" is an African-American adaptation of the story "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."

In 1978, the Broadway musical was transformed for the silver screen with Diana Ross playing the role of Dorothy and Michael Jackson the Scarecrow.

Back in January, NBC executive told reporters the network had acquired the rights to both "The Wiz" and "The Music Man," but was leaning toward "The Wiz" as being next in line.

But with the decision to move forward with "The Wiz," it sounds like NBC is trying to bring this year's live musical event to a whole new level.

Cirque du Soleil is co-producing the musical and will then be bringing it back to Broadway for the 2016-17 season.

Robert Greenblatt, NBC's entertainment chairman, said in a statement to Variety, *"It's a natural step for our live musical events ... Cirque's incredible imagination will help bring the fantasy world of Oz vividly to life and give this great show a modern spin on the age-old story we all love."*

NBC has had mixed success with its last two musical events.

Entertainment Weekly reports 18.5 million viewers tuned in to watch "The Sound of Music" starring Carrie Underwood in 2013. While the next year, "Peter Pan Live" starring Alison Williams only brought in 9.1 million.

And the network now has a little competition with Fox announcing it's putting together a live-action version of "Grease" for early 2016 starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens.

NBC hasn't announced any casting decisions yet, but we do know its version of "The Wiz" will air December 3rd.  Reported by Newsy 13 hours ago.

NBC's next live musical will be The Wiz, produced by Cirque du Soleil

NBC has officially made its live musical event an annual tradition — and there's an interesting twist this year. After staying on solid ground for 2013's Sound of Music Live and flying gracefully for 2014's Peter Pan Live, this year's holiday event will be a version of The Wiz produced by acrobatic connoisseurs Cirque du Soleil. Which is to say, we're expecting the Tin Man to double backflip through a very high ring while trying to flee the funky monkeys.

As with the previous events, The Wiz will be executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who reportedly want to bring The Wiz back to Broadway in the 2016-2017 season. The 1975 stage production for The Wiz won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The 1978 film adaptation,... Reported by The Verge 8 hours ago.

Broadway San Jose Presents ‘ONCE’

“ONCE” is the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

(PRWEB) April 01, 2015

“ONCE,” winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, will play the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, located at 255 Almaden Blvd., for a limited engagement from April 21-26. Tickets for “Once” range in price from $33-$83 and are available now by visiting http://www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-982-ARTS(2787).

“ONCE,” which was also named Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards, ran for more than 1,100 performances on Broadway with acclaimed international productions from London and Melbourne to Japan and South Korea.

“ONCE” features the Academy Award-winning music and lyrics of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, a book by award-winning Irish playwright and screenwriter, Enda Walsh (“Penelope,” “Hunger,” “The New Electric Ballroom”), direction by the acclaimed Scottish director of “Black Watch,” John Tiffany, movement by Steven Hoggett (“Black Watch,” “American Idiot”) and music supervision and orchestrations by Martin Lowe (“Mamma Mia!”). The set and costume design are by five-time Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (“The Coast of Utopia,” “Mary Poppins”), lighting design is by Tony winner Natasha Katz (“Aida,” “The Coast of Utopia”), and sound design is by Clive Goodwin.

“ONCE” is the celebrated new musical based on the Academy Award-winning film. It tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolve into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together. Brought to the stage by an award-winning team of visionary artists and featuring an ensemble cast of gifted actor/musicians, “ONCE” is a musical celebration of life and love: thrilling in its originality, daring in its honesty and unforgettable in every way.

The 2007 Academy Award-winning film, “ONCE,” was written and directed by John Carney and starred Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, with original music and lyrics by Hansard and Irglová.

The Oscar winning independent Irish film “ONCE” was made for $150,000. Shot in 17 days, it went on to gross $20 million worldwide, becoming a critically acclaimed international smash. It stars Hansard, from the popular Irish rock band The Frames, and Irglová. Hansard and Irglová won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original song for “Falling Slowly,” the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Music, and the soundtrack was nominated for two Grammy Awards.

“ONCE” was originally developed at the American Repertory Theater (Cambridge, Massachusetts) in April 2011; Diane Paulus, Artistic Director; Diane Borger, Producer.

A developmental run of “ONCE” at New York Theatre Workshop (James C. Nicola and William Russo) began performances on Nov. 15, 2011 and opened Dec. 6. The production broke box office records and concluded a sold-out engagement, including a two-week extension through Jan. 15, 2012.

“ONCE” is produced by Barbara Broccoli, John N. Hart Jr., Patrick Milling Smith, Frederick Zollo, Brian Carmody, Michael G. Wilson, Orin Wolf and Executive Producer Robert Cole, in association with New York Theatre Workshop.

The San Jose engagement of “ONCE” is presented by Broadway San Jose, a Nederlander Presentation.

About the company:
Broadway San Jose presents Broadway musical theatre to the Silicon Valley. They perform in the heart of beautiful downtown San Jose at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. As part of the Nederlander family, the Silicon Valley is directly connected to Broadway in New York, making it easy for them to bring the magic of Broadway right to San Jose. Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Spring 2015

Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Spring 2015 Welcome once again to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to new music. Four times a year, we round up a list of albums, singles, EPs, and DVDs arriving over the coming months. Hey, maybe you'll buy some of them! This installment covers spring 2015.

With different release dates for digital and physical versions of albums, as well as different release dates for different countries (though that's changing this summer!), compiling this list is tricky. With that in mind, we tried to stick with North American physical release dates as much as possible, with exceptions as noted. Please note that release dates may change.

*Notable Releases:*

*The Mountain Goats: Beat the Champ (April 7, Merge)*

John Darnielle's latest Mountain Goats record is set in the 1970s world of professional wrestling, telling stories about wrestlers like Chavo Guerrero Jr., Bruiser Brody, and the Sheik. Read our interview with Darnielle about the album.

*Waxahatchee: Ivy Tripp (April 7, Merge)*

Katie Crutchfield returns following the success of her breakout album Cerulean Salt with Waxahatchee's debut album on Merge Records.

*Passion Pit: Kindred (April 21, Columbia)*

After ditching the lineup that played on Gossamer, Michael Angelakos has made another Passion Pit album full of synth-pop-coated honesty. Read our interview with him about the record.

*Speedy Ortiz: Foil Deer (April 21, Carpark)*

"The music isn't coming from a dark place," said Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz's follow-up to Major Arcana. The Massachusetts band return this spring with their latest endeavor.

*Blur: The Magic Whip (April 28, Warner Bros./Parlophone)*

Deciding that the temperature was just fine to finish up an album, Damon Albarn and Blur are back with their first studio record in 12 years.

*Raekwon: Fly International Luxurious Art (April 28, IceH2O)*

The Chef's latest long-player features guest spots from Ghostface, Snoop Dogg, A$AP Rocky, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Busta Rhyme, French Montana, and others.

*Kelela: Hallucinogen EP (May 5, self-released)*

Kelela's six-song EP serves as the middle place between her breakout mixtape Cut 4 Me and her forthcoming debut album. It features "A Message", which is a collaboration with Arca.

*Mikal Cronin: MCIII (May 5, Merge)*

The Ty Segall Band member is back with his third self-titled LP, which features more robust pop songs with elaborate string arrangements. The entire B-side is a six-song cycle which serves as a short-form concept album.

*The Tallest Man on Earth: Dark Bird Is Home (May 12, Dead Oceans)*

Kristian Matsson is back with his first studio album since 2012's There's No Leaving Now.

*Faith No More: Sol Invictus (May 19, Reclamation/Ipecac)*

The San Francisco alternative rock heroes are back with their first new album since 1997's Album of the Year. Read "Perennially Contentious", our feature on the band.

*Holly Herndon: Platform (May 19, RVNG Intl./4AD)*

Herndon returns with the Movement follow-up, which features the previously released tracks "Chorus" and "Home". Read "Fix the Future", our new interview with Herndon.

*Shamir: Ratchet (May 19, XL)*

Shamir Bailey's 10-song debut album on XL includes his great 2014 single "On the Regular". Read our "Rising" interview with Bailey.

*Hot Chip: Why Make Sense? (May 19, Domino)*

Hot Chip's In Our Heads follow-up features the single "Huarache Lights". Every single copy comes with a unique color variation of the same design.

*Unknown Mortal Orchestra: Multi-Love (May 26, Jagjaguwar)*

Ruban Nielson said his band Unknown Mortal Orchestra are "building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life" and "creating sounds that aren’t quite like anyone else’s" on their follow-up to 2013's II.

*Jamie xx: In Colour (June 2, Young Turks)*

On his debut solo album, Jamie xx has enlisted the talents of his xx bandmates Romy and Oliver Sim as well as Four Tet, Young Thug, and Popcaan. It features the singles "Girl", "Sleep Sound", "Loud Places", and "Gosh".

*Florence and the Machine: How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (June 2, Republic/Island)*

Florence and the Machine team up with producer Markus Dravs (Björk, Arcade Fire) and get arrangements from Goldfrapp's Will Gregory. The album features the single "What Kind of Man".

*Sun Kil Moon: Universal Themes (June 2, Caldo Verde)*

In 2014, he broke hearts and then declared war on the War on Drugs. His new one features electric guitar (on "Ali/Spinks 2") and "The Possum" (which previously got released as a 10").

*Jenny Hval: Apocalpyse, girl (June 9, Sacred Bones)*

Following her 2013 LP Innocence is Kinky and Meshes of Voice, her 2014 collaborative LP with Susanna, Jenny Hval returns with a Sacred Bones album featuring members of Swans and Jaga Jazzist. It was produced by Norwegian noise fixture Lasse Marhaug.

*Hudson Mohawke: Lantern (June 16, Warp)*

The TNGHT co-head and Kanye West collaborator will release an album featuring collaborations with Antony, Miguel, Jhené Aiko, and others. It features the single "Very First Breath".

*Migos: YRN Tha Album (June 16, Quality Control)*

On the success of some huge singles and mixtapes, Migos ready a debut album featuring Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Chris Brown, DJ Mustard, and others. It features the single "One Time".

*A$AP Rocky: At.Long.Last.A$AP (TBA, Polo Grounds/RCA)*

The A$AP Mob leader's next album was executive produced by Danger Mouse and the late A$AP Yams. It's set to feature guest spots from Lykke Li, FKA Twigs, Juicy J, and Clams Casino.

*Chic: It's About Time (TBA, Warner Bros.)*

Following a huge Daft Punk-aided resurgence, Nile Rodgers will release Chic's first studio album since 1992. It includes the single "I'll Be There", which has a video starring Karlie Kloss.

*Chromatics: Dear Tommy (TBA, Italians Do It Better)*

There are lots of details out there for Chromatics' Kill For Love follow-up—the artwork, the tracklist, and the lead single "I Can Never Be Myself When You're Around". We're just not sure quite when it's getting released. Read "Into the Black", our new feature on Johnny Jewel.

*Chance the Rapper/Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment: Surf (TBA, self-released)*

Chance the Rapper has made it clear that Surf is not a Chance the Rapper record—it's helmed by Nico Segal, aka Donnie Trumpet, and the Social Experiment. Still, Chance is sure to have a prominent role. It may include the previously shared singles "No Better Blues", "Sunday Candy", and "Nothing Came to Me".

*Rihanna: TBA (TBA, Def Jam)*

The superstar's eighth album doesn't have a title or release date yet. But we know that it's being executive produced by Kanye West and will feature "Bitch Better Have My Money", "FourFiveSeconds", and "American Oxygen".

*Kanye West: So Help Me God (TBA, Def Jam)*

He was accompanied by a bunch of British rappers wearing all black and a couple flamethrowers during his BRIT Awards performance of "All Day". He sang lovingly to his daughter, aided by Sir Paul McCartney, on "Only One". He teamed up with Vic Mensa and Sia on "Wolves". We've got a loose idea of the direction Kanye's headed on So Help Me God, but there's still no full tracklist or release date.
